Background
The FCAR gene encodes the Fc alpha receptor (FcαR), which is a receptor for the Fc region of immunoglobulin A (IgA). It is mainly expressed on myeloid cells, such as neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages. FcαR mediates various immune functions, including phagocytosis, the release of inflammatory mediators, and the activation of oxidative burst, which helps in the killing of pathogens. It plays an important role in mucosal immunity, as IgA is the predominant antibody class at mucosal surfaces.
