Recombinant CHO-K1 cells have been developed to stably overexpress the human somatostatin receptor 5 (SST5) on their surface, and they contain high levels of the G protein Gαi, which is involved in coupling with the receptor to facilitate downstream signaling pathways.
Drug screening and biological assays
SSTR5, or the somatostatin receptor 5, is a G-protein coupled receptor that binds somatostatin with high affinity. It is primarily expressed in the pituitary gland and pancreas, where it regulates growth hormone and insulin secretion, respectively. SSTR5 activation leads to decreased intracellular cAMP levels and inhibition of cell proliferation. It is a target for somatostatin analogs used to treat acromegaly and other hormone-secreting tumors.
